Chroma Soma Grenache, Carrie Anne Sumner

Chroma Soma is a soil essay in the Roussillon focusing on the purity of fruit from single varieties. A focus on Chroma (colour) and Soma (body), and a personal project of Carrie Anne Sumner, half of Domaine des Enfants. A very small bottling of about 400 bottles. She now buy from other vineyards too, so she can blend grapes from younger and older vines depending on the year.

When Marcel Bühler takes over 25 hectares of old vines in Maury back in 2006, he knew he was onto something really special. Over half of the vineyard had been planted pre-WW2, and some vines are now over a century-old. His philosophy is pretty straightforward: let nature do its thing while respecting the work of generations of vignerons before him. His wife Carrie Anne Sumner takes over in the cellar, where everything is kept to a minimum. No commercial yeasts, no additions or filtration, no fining, just a touch of SO2 when necessary.

The deep rooted vines in schist and granitic soil produce concentrated, rich and complex grapes as yields are kept as low as 10hl/ha. The majority of the vineyards is planted with Grenache Noir, the grape behind Maury's local port-like wine. Everything is done by hand, with an extreme dedication to selecting and sorting the healthiest and best grapes possible. The results are beautiful, rich, honest and expressive wines that represent their region and the people who made them.

Producer Marcel Bühler & Carrie Anne Sumner

Viticulture & Winemaking Organic viticulture. Early picking, foot trodden grapes. Cold maceration, followed by a fermentation in old demi-muid with indigenous yeast, finished in a sandstone egg where it is aged for 1 year. Unfined, unfiltered.

Grapes Grenache (on granit soil)

Region Côtes Catalanes, Roussillon, France

ABV 12.5%

Tasting Notes The focus is on the fruit and a lighter style and colour. Soft tannins, juicy red fruit and spice, a hint of strawberry... Intriguing and absolutely delicious.
