Primula, Domaine de l'Epinay
Clisson, a town close to the Western city of Nantes, is a city of mad contrast. The former medieval fortress was the last residence of the Duke of Brittany Francois II, before his daughter Anne married the King of France. After a violent Revolutionary period, the town was redesigned by Napoleon's sculptor, Lemot, and turned into an Italian inspired, Neoclassic destination.
Clisson is also at the centre of the Nantes vineyards, famous for Muscadet's but also going through quite a revolution. The new generation has been pushing for more terroir focused farming and winemaking, a push for indigenous varietals, and a move away from chemicals. Like many other Northern regions, the recent years have also been much warmer, which helped concentrate fruit and lower inputs in the vineyard. All in all, the quality of the wines in the region is now very high.
Domaine de L'Epinay is one of these modern producers who took over from the previous generation and turned to organic farming and low intervention winemaking.
